Basic Aquarium Checklist

Hello there! First time? No, worries! We’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of all the essential things that you and your fish will need in order to set up your aquarium! Happy Fishkeeping!

  1. AQUARIUM
    Tank size depends on the species of fish or inverts that you’ll be keeping.
  2. FILTER
    Filter size depends on the size of your tank and what species of aquatic creatures you’ll be keeping. Some species just need the extra filtration. We’re looking at you, goldfish!
  3. AIR PUMP, AIR STONE, TUBING
    To increase aeration in the tank.
  4. HEATER
    Essential for tropical fish and if you’re living in a cold area.
  5. DECHLORINATOR
    If you’re using chlorinated tap water, this is a life saver! Chlorine is not safe for our aquatic friends.
  6. TEST KIT
    A very important tool to test your tank’s waters, in order to ensure it is safe for your aquatic pets. Test kits are essential for cycling your tank!
  7. FOOD
    Depends on the species of fish you’ll be keeping.
  8. LIGHTS
    To help regulate your aquatic friends’ circadian rhythm and so you can see them clearly!
  9. SUBSTRATE
    Gravel/Sand/Soil
  10. DECORATIONS AND ORNAMENTS
    Your fish will appreciate it! They provide a place for them to hide and explore!
  11. LIVE PLANTS (Optional)
    If you’re planning to set up a planted tank, having a soil substrate will widen your plant options. Healthy plants help in lowering nitrates level.
  12. AQUARIUM GRAVEL CLEANER/SIPHON
    A cleaning tool to help suck up those nasty stuff!
  13. NET
    For moving fish and inverts.
  14. MAGNET SCRAPER
    For cleaning your tank’s glass/acrylic. Please note, glass and acrylic scrapers differ.
  15. BACTERIA IN A BOTTLE
    There are a lot of ways on how to cycle your tank and this is one of them!
